Given all the regulations, taxes and smoking bans which impact cigar makers, why would anyone want to start their own brand today? No problem, says Matt Booth, the owner of the high-flying Room 101 Silver emporium of high-end men’s jewelry and fashion items. “It’s part of the male lifestyle,” he says, “ so we want to have a cigar as part of our line.”
To complement his bold designs, Booth turned to Camacho’s Christian Eiroa and the Room 101 blend is a winner. It’s medium in body, with a toasty aroma and exceptionally dark, Semilla 101 wrapper grown in Honduras specially for this brand.
There’s a rich, caramelized taste off the start and just a splash of spice on the finish. The cigars we tried burned well, but the spicy elements grew in volume in the second half. A balance with the sweetness was maintained, but the final impression is of spice.
The Room 101 line is uniquely named for area codes for each of its six sizes, but is traditionally boxed in 25s at retail prices of $7.00 to $9.00, not including local taxes. This is an interesting cigar and one worth trying if you enjoy both sweetness and spice in your cigars.
Overall grade: A-: Excellent.
